Last week, I was on a highly inspiring field trip to two beverage manufacturing plants in Southern Vietnam. As someone dedicated to exports at Pacific Goods, a question constantly occupies my mind: How can Vietnamese agricultural products break free from the “cheap, raw commodity” label and confidently enter the world’s most demanding markets?
Story 1: “The Teacher” and the 200 Recipes of Authentic Flavors
My first stop was a bottled beverage factory. Stepping into the office, the most surprising thing wasn’t the massive scale of the machinery, but how the staff addressed their Director.
They didn’t call her “Boss.” They called her “Teacher.”
As it turned out, the Director is a PhD who still actively lectures at a local university. The majority of the engineering and R&D team here consists of her brightest former students, whom she personally recruited, mentored, and polished from their university days.
Standing in front of the modern, fully automated filling lines, she passionately shared her “treasure trove” of over 200 proprietary beverage formulas that she and her students developed. Every single recipe focuses on preserving the natural flavors of Mekong Delta fruits, while achieving consistency at a massive industrial scale.
In that factory, I witnessed a beautiful transition: Academic brilliance guiding young local talent to master the world’s most advanced manufacturing technologies.
Story 2: 30 Minutes of Pure Passion from a Chemical Engineer
Leaving the beverage plant, I visited an alkaline ionized water facility. I was welcomed by the founder—a seasoned chemical engineer with decades of hands-on industry experience before starting his own company.
When I asked what set his water apart. He spent the next 30 minutes taking me through every corner of the plant. He meticulously explained everything from the natural, mineral-rich groundwater of Tay Ninh to the inner workings of their imported high-tech filtration and electrolysis systems.
“Natural mineral water is great, but our alkaline ionized water is a whole different story…” he explained, pointing at the electrolysis plates. He broke down the science of pH levels, micro-clustered water molecules that hydrate cells instantly, and how he fine-tuned the electrical currents to achieve the ultimate health-boosting water profile.
Watching him speak about chemical reactions with such pure passion, I realized one thing: Without the deep understanding of a technical expert, a million-dollar machine from Japan is nothing more than a lifeless block of metal.
